The most common birthdays in the U.S.
September 9 is the most common birthday, with an average of 12,344 births a day from 1994 to 2014. 19 of the top 50 dates fall in September, and only July 7 breaks into the top ten from another month.
Why September is so crowded
Count back 38 weeks from mid-September and you land in the second half of December. Conceptions in the United States tend to rise around the holidays, and the births arrive nine months later.
That is not the whole story, because the peak is too broad for one holiday to explain. Daily births start climbing in June and stay high through early October. Researchers have linked this kind of seasonal pattern to things like weather and daylight as well as holiday time off.
Scheduling plays a part too. Weekdays see far more births than weekends, and a date in the middle of a busy season gets a further lift when no holiday gets in the way.
